COATING TECHNOLOGIES
An important aspect of the work carried out at Brayton Energy Canada is the integration of coating technologies as an innovative solution to many engineering problems. The engineers at BEC have a rich background in the field of thermal spraying and coating technologies, with a specialization in low temperature coating processes such as Cold Spraying (CS) and Pulsed Gas Dynamic Spraying (PGDS). Our experience in this field will help you implement coating technologies to your engineering challenges.

COLD SPRAY WELDING

BEC is actively investigating the possibility of using coating technologies such as CS and PGDS to join two parts as an alternative to welding. This approach eliminates the onset of heat-affected zones and can be carried out in close proximity of brazed joints, which otherwise complicated using traditional welding methods.

UNIT CELL FABRICATION FOR COMPACT HEAT EXCHANGER

COLD SPRAY & PULSED GAS DYNAMIC SPRAYING

BEC carries out numerous deposition trials using the Cold Spray and PGDS low-temperature coating processes. Both processes rely on kinetic energy rather than thermal energy to produce coatings (metallic powder particles are accelerated in a high velocity flow and projected on a surface where they plastically deform and adhere to form a coating). These processes have been demonstrated to offer excellent control of the deposited material's microstructure and chemical composition and have been successfully used to deposit coatings with numerous types of materials such as Al alloys, Cu, Ni, Zn, stainless steels, Ti, MCrAIYs, WC-Co and metal matrix composites.
SPRAYING ON POROUS MEDIA
BEC is conducting coating deposition trials on porous surfaces such aswire screen mesh wafers. The objective is to produce a coating that will seal outer surfaces of the mesh wafer and create an internal flow path for use in a highly effective heat exchanger unit. This approach offers an inexpensive alternative to sealing the mesh using brazed sheets, which can be labour intensive and costly.

Brayton Energy Canada is actively involved in a variety of research and development projects aiming to make innovative use of low-temperature coating technologies such as Cold Spray and Pulse Gas Dynamic Spraying. Our work has explored the possibilities of using Cold Spray as an alternative to welding for the joining of two parts to eliminate the onset of heat-affected zones and allow the creation of Cold spray ‘’welds’’ in close proximity of brazed joints. We have also investigated the use of Cold Spray for the deposition of dense coatings on porous mesh wafer surfaces and looked into the production of bulk Cold Spray coatings as a novel ultra-compact heat exchanger manufacturing technique. Our technical team possesses extensive experience and first-hand working knowledge of Cold Spray coating technologies, making us perfectly suited to assist you in finding the proper coating solution for your application.
